How often have you been to a Latin Club, gone to a wedding, a Christmas party or any fun occasion where dancing is in order? At first you see everyone dancing and having fun, then your body begins to move by itself. You get that desire to join them, but at the same time you realize that you don't know how to dance (although you wish you could)! Worse yet, sometimes you miss the chance to meet those special people you've always wanted to have fun with but were too shy to start a conversation or simply say "hello" or ask them their name.

Well, dancing is the answer to overcome this frightening experience. Dancing is, in fact, the first step of social activity. Good dancing is considered a lifetime investment in fun, poise, confidence, improved personality, friendly gathering and meeting new friends. Beyond this, dancing is a superb physical conditioner, providing fun without feeling as though you're working at it! Salsa dancing opens up a wonderful new world of togetherness and a thriving year-round social calendar.

My name is Manuel and I will share with you my personal Salsa story. I walked into a Latin Salsa club one winter night, looked around and saw so many fine-looking people dancing and having fun. Among them, there was a charming lady that I'd seen somewhere else before. She had a type of persona that makes one's head turn to do a double-take. Know what I mean? I wanted to meet and tell her, at least, how charming and gorgeous I thought she was. I also wanted to ask her where she had learned how to dance like that. Man! Every part of her body moved in unison to the music. It was a real treat to see her dance!

After she finished dancing, I saw her walk towards the bar and thought to myself, what a perfect opportunity to meet her! I approached her and said hello, then I introduced myself. She looked at me and said "Oh! Manuel, my favourite Bachata song is playing! Make me dance!" My heart started pounding and all of a sudden I realized, once again, that I didn't know how to dance any Latin dances! All I knew of Latin dance was what I learned during my trips to Cuba, Dominican Republic and Venezuela while vacationing. Besides, Latin music is something that I had never really considered in my life. So I knew nada - zero dancing! Honestly, I couldn't tell the difference between a Salsa, a Merengue or a Bachata. She insisted however; "Come on! I would love to dance with you!" She added, "That song brings back fun memories for me. You remind me a fellow that I danced that song with in the Dominican Republic last year." My shoulders shrank and I responded, "I'm sorry, I don't know how to dance." She sadly murmured, "You should be. Too bad!" as she turned around and walked away. She joined her friends and went back to the dance floor

At that moment I told myself "That's it! I'm learning how to dance Salsa. I'll take lessons." In the days that followed I ordered a couple of Salsa DVDs over the internet. After receiving them I began studying the moves and turn-patterns. I paid particular attention to the warm-up session, dance techniques and body motion. I also began conditioning my body for Salsa dancing. I twisted my body in different directions until I could somewhat imitate the instructors in the DVD. I just knew that "footwork" or "shining" as it is called, would be good training for my brain, especially my memory and coordination.

I started by becoming familiar with Salsa, Merengue, Bachata and Cha-Cha rhythms then learned the Basic steps. Finally, I learned the fundamental figures and simple variations. At first, I couldn't even start on ONE, the first beat of the music! I went back to the internet and ordered an ear-training CD, where every beat is counted out for you, the tempo of the music is accentuated and each' instrument in a Latin band is described. A few days after receiving it, I began listening to all the Salsa songs and Latin rhythm that I could get my hands on. I began to understand Merengue, Bachata and Salsa rhythms. I learned how to count and all of this was a pleasurable experience!

Those DVDs allowed me to have a good idea of what I wanted to learn. They actually helped me to set-up my goals. A month later, I enrolled in a Salsa class with Tony Rausseo from Hot Latin Salsa Dance studio. I enjoyed it so much that I enrolled in a second class. This time it was a "Cardio Latin Class". This class helped me gain flexibility, endurance and above all, sharpened my reflexes. Now I go to my Salsa class once a week, watch my DVDs and listen to my ear-training CD as much as possible. I also go out to Salsa clubs once a week to practise what I learned in the class. All this is part of my commitment to improve my dancing, which in turn, I believe, will also increase my lifespan.

Three months later, I went back to the Latin club where I saw that charming and beautiful girl. My surprise was as great as my joy when I saw her there. She was as pretty as ever! My legs were literally shaking. I couldn't tell whether it was because of my emotions from seeing her again or from the hot Latin Salsa rhythms that I had come to love so much. I shook my head to get out of that state of mind and walked towards her as calmly as possible. I said "Hello Salsera!" and invited her to dance. She accepted gladly with a friendly smile on her face. Then she asked me, "Do I know you? I think I've seen you before." I smiled back and put my arms around her and danced the night away. I really had the time of my life that night!
All the pleasure and happiness that I experienced that divine night came about because of my decision to learn how to dance. Salsa dancing has definitely changed my life!
